The name amethyst comes from the Greek amethustos meaning 'sober' or 'not drunken' and since classical times amethyst has been believed to moderate unruly behaviour and to encourage clarity of mind. Amethyst is a variety of crystalline quartz coloured by iron and is found in shades varying from pale lilac to dark purple.
